Chrysler Nassau: New Name, Improved Dynamics for 2011 Sebring

DETROIT — Chrysler reportedly will use the name "Nassau" for its future midsize sedan that will replace the Sebring. The name had been used on a concept for a four-door coupe shown at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, but the upcoming sedan is expected to have little resemblance to that design.

Dodge President and CEO Ralph Gilles told Inside Line that the Sebring replacement and the 2011 Dodge Avenger will receive all-new suspension tuning and a new tire spec, with the priority being on driving dynamics.

Gilles, who personally owns a Viper ACR and publicly praises the ride and handling of BMWs, says the new chassis setup will even include 1 degree of negative camber in the front suspension, resulting in better handling and grip. Gilles says the change will shave 3,000 miles off the life of the tires, but that's a choice the automaker is willing to make.

Like most Chrysler models, the Sebring has been suffering from an ultra-cheap interior, and as previously reported, Chrysler will give the future Sebring and Avenger all-new interiors.

The Detroit Free Press and other media reported on the name choice, although Chrysler had no comment on the reports. The paper also noted that the Nassau, expected to be a 2011 model, will get the new V6 Pentastar engine or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder.

Inside Line says: A new name, a better car. At last it's time to turn the page on the Chrysler Sebring. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent and Kelly Toepke, News Editor
